Donated Blood: There Just Isn't Enough To Go Around

Donating blood can be scary, we all know that. People have so many excuses for why they can’t: “I might pass out”, “I’m scared of needles”, “it makes me dizzy”, “the last time I went the person was terrible and was poking around in my arm for 15 minutes”, “I just don’t have time to go out of my way to do it”, “my blood sugar is too low”.

We’re so quick to come up with reasons not to donate, and I think one of the largest reasons is that we assume we don’t have to donate because there are so many other people out there doing it. We feel like it doesn’t really make a difference. That’s just not the case though!

This week Buzzfeed Australia released this video, which shows people donating blood for the first time. The video, which was obviously geared for entertainment value, also has some really eye-opening statistics about blood donation that you might not have know.

Like the fact that only 3% of the population donates blood.

Or the fact that only 1 in 30 people donate blood, but 1 in 3 people will need donated blood at some point during their lifetime.

It’s something we don’t really think about, that there is a huge number of people out there whose lives may depend on donated blood, but that there’s simply just not enough donated blood to go around. Donating blood is easy to do, takes very little time, and can go a long way towards saving someone’s life. Don’t you think it’s worth it? We sure do.
